Por fin ya tengo la primera Gocco impresa. Me tomé esta primera prueba como experimento, dispuesto a echar a perder bombillas y pantallas pero salió todo bien a la primera. Me he dado cuenta de que es bastante diferente de la serigrafia tradicional, sobretodo por la forma en que la tinta toca el papel: la Gocco "aplasta" más cantidad de tinta, lo que hace que las líneas tiendan a engrosarse. Esta característica también hace que algunas zonas queden con menos tinta, pero yo creo que estos "defectos" son los que le dan gracia al sistema Gocco...
Resumiendo, que me ha gustado mucho la experiencia y seguiré haciendo más porque resulta divertidísimo. Aún no tiene título ni tirada definitiva y estoy pensando incluso en añadir algunos detalles a mano, pero ya iré viendo...

The first Gocco print!
The first Gocco is printed at least. I took this first print as a test, convinced that i was going to spoil some masters and bulbs but everything worked perfect. I have realised that Gocco system is slightly diferent than traditional screenprinting in the way that ink touches the surface of the paper: Gocco " Me he dado cuenta de que es bastante diferente de la serigrafia tradicional, sobretodo por la forma en que la tinta toca el papel: Gocco "squashes" more ink amount throug the screen, what makes the lines to become thicker. This characteristic also makes that some areas get less ink, but these are the "flaws" that gives Gocco system his own personality...

El cartel que anuncia esta obra también lo dibujé yo, asi que el trabajo de diseño ha consistido básicamente en adaptar el cartel para el formato de la web. La gente de Megabolt ha publicado mi dibujo para un bloc de notas de su Sketchbook Project. Es el tercero de un "artist series" (los primeros fueron Julie West y Adam Smith). El Sketchbook Project consiste básicamente en que cada vez que un bloc se vende, otro igual se le entrega a un niño que esté ingresado en un hospital. El niño dibujará en el bloc y cuando lo termine, sus dibujos se subirán a la web (cada bloc está numerado, para poder ver los dibujos una vez estén subidos a la web). Es un proyecto muy original para el que me ha hecho mucha ilusión colaborar.
¡Espero que se vendan muchos blocks!

Released my drawing for the Megabolt's "Sketchbook Project"
Guys at Megabolt have just released my drawing for the Sketchbook Project. It's the third one of an "artist series" (Julie West and Adam Smith draw the previous sketchbooks). The Sketchbook Project consists basically in this: every time a book is sold, a second book will go to a child in a hospital. The child will draw in the book and, if said child chooses, the pages will be uploaded for viewing (each book is marked with a book number, separate from the edition number, for future tracking online). It's a very original project and i've been so honored to colaborate with.
I hope they sell all the sketchbooks!

Ya tengo cuatro "monetas", esta es la cuarta. Es dificil ajustar los brazos y las orejas pero a medida que los hago voy descubriendo trucos para que queden mejor. Intento que queden los más iguales posible, pero es inevitable que cada peluche sea ligeramente distinto a los demás. Ni os imaginais la cantidad de relleno que cabe en un muñeco tan pequeño...
The "monetas" are almost finished...
I've finished four "monetas", this is the 4th. Is hard to sew the arms and the ears in the exact place but while i sew the plushes, i discover new tricks for improving the result. I try to make each "moneta" look identical to the others, but each one has slight differences. I'm sure you can't imagine the amount of stuffing that fits inside of such a little plush...

Ya están terminadas las "espaldas" de las 5 "Monetas". Han quedado bastante bien, ahora estoy a la espera de recibir una parte con la que ya podré terminarlas.
También os presento la prueba que he hecho para transformar al Meph-serigrafía en Meph-peluche. La parte delantera ha quedado muy bien, ahora estoy trabajando en la espalda y en los brazos, que van a ser bastante complicados de hacer...

Este fotograma confirma lo que sospechaba desde hace tiempo: la serigrafía firmada y numerada de Lenica que conseguí en eBay hace tiempo por 14€ es original. Aunque está firmada, tenía mis dudas porque no encontraba imágenes del este cartel en páginas sobre Lenica o sobre carteles polacos. Hoy he descubierto este fotograma del propio Lenica sosteniendo un ejemplar del cartel en un programa de televisión emitido en abril de 1973 titulado "Screening Room with Jan Lenica"...
Al final va a ser verdad que tengo un tesorito en mi colección...

This frame confirms what i was suspecting for a long time: the signed and numbered screenprint that i bought on eBay a long time ago by 14€ it's original. Although the poster is signed, i was doubtful because there are no pictures of this poster in websites about Lenica or about polish posters. Today i've found this frame of Lenica himself holding a copy of the poster in the 1973 tv show "Screening Room with Jan Lenica"...
Now i know that i have little treasure in my collection...

Este año la Gala Splai será a beneficio de APADAHCAS, que es una asociación que agrupa a padres de niños y niñas, adolescentes y adultos de la provincia de Castellón diagnosticados por TDA-H (Trastorno por Déficit de Atención con o sin Hiperactividad) para que obtengan la atención que precisan a nivel educativo y sanitario. Esperemos que se obtenga una buena recaudación para que esta asociación pueda seguir con el magnífico trabajo que realiza... Espero que os guste el cartel.

Emblema para una expedición al Baruntse

Dentro de poco parte una expedición hacia Nepal para intentar hacer cima y abrir una nueva via en el Baruntse, que es una montaña gigante (7.129m) que está en el corazón del Himalaya, entre los macizos del Makalu y el Everest. La expedición está organizada por Canon y Rincón de la Montaña, y entre los expedicionarios se encuentra Oscar Pascual, un magnífico fotógrafo que retratará el día a día de esta aventura. He tenido el grandísimo honor de haber recibido el encargo de diseñar el emblema para la expedición, y no os podéis imaginar la ilusión que me ha hecho poder "participar" aunque sea un poquito en esta aventura tan increíble. Espero que os guste el diseño. Ps: ¡Gracias por todo Sandrita!

An expedition is heading to Nepal to reach the top and to open a new way on the Baruntse, a giant mountain (7.129m) placed in the middle of the Himalaya, between the Makalu and the Everest. Ya está terminada "Here comes the sun!"... Sin duda ha sido la serigrafía más dificil de imprimir de todas las que he hecho hasta ahora. Demasiados detalles casi imposibles de casar...
Pero la verdad es que me gusta mucho el resultado. Ahora tengo que elegir las mejores y estoy pensando en reducir un poco la tirada, porque prefiero no bajar el nivel de calidad. Este fin de semana tendré que numerarlas, firmarlas y dejarlas terminadas del todo. Y posiblemente el lunes ya estén disponibles en la tienda. ¡Espero que os guste!

"Here comes the sun!" it's finished... It's been the most hard to print of all the prints i've done until now. Too much detail almost impossible to register...
But the truth is that i love the result. Now i must choose the best printed and i'm thinking about reducing the run, because i rather not to low the quality level. This weekend i will number, sign and finish them. Probably on monday the prints will be available at the shop. Hope you like it!

Ya está impreso el cuarto color... Ya sabía que esta serigrafía iba a ser muy dificil de imprimir, pero a pesar de la dificultad no ha quedado mal. Han salido algunos errores de registro, pero estoy contento de como están quedando los colores. Mañana imprimiré el último color...

Ayer mismo llegaron las tintas que estaba esperando (muchísimo más pronto de lo que esperaba). La verdad es que estoy muy contento con el servicio de Dharma Trading Co. (www.dharmatrading.com). Venden Speedball, Versatex y Jacquard y están bien de precio. Lo único malo son los gastos de envío, que suelen costar tanto como las tintas...
El caso es que ayer imprimí el primer color. Tuve algunos problemas porque hubo un poco de variación entre algunas copias, pero es algo que no me preocpa demasiado. A ver si hoy puedo imprimir el segundo azul...

Medirán 95x95mm, y estarán impresas a 2 colores sobre papel Canson blanco de 250g. y tal vez tendrán algunos detalles en golpe en seco. La tirada total será de 100 pares de serigrafias firmadas y numeradas. El precio estará alrededor de 5-6 euros...

¡ Ya tengo las pegatinas! Han quedado mucho mejor de lo que me esperaba: el rojo es intensísimo y el negro ha quedado muy bien definido... Las han impreso en Sticky Rick's y la verdad es que estoy muy contento. El trato con ellos ha sido genial, muy profesionales, muy amables... La pegatinas son de vinilo y son pequeñitas (5 cms de diámetro). Las he impreso un poco de prueba para ver como imprimían en Sticky Ricks, pero viendo el resultado (y el precio) estoy seguro de que no tardaré en imprimir más...

Finally the stickers are here! They look better than i expected: the red ink is very bright and the black ink looks very sharp... They have been printed at Sticky Rick's and i'm very happy with the result. The communication with them it's been perfect, very professional, very kind... The sticker are printed on white vinyl and they are tiny (2" diameter). Aqui podéis ver en que ha derivado el cuadro de "The Giant"...
Aún no está terminado, estoy aún dibujando los detalles. Tampoco tiene título. Sólo sé que el dibujo es sobre surf, vampiros y amaneceres... acepto sugerencias para el título. De momento lleva tres azules, dos naranjas y negro. Posiblemente el tamaño vaya a ser 165x165mm (igual que Meph). El primer esquema de colores lo habia resuelto con tres azules y negro, y quedaba simplemente como una escena de surf nocturno. Pero no me pude resistir a mezclar vampiros y amanecer y añadí los dos tonos naranja... ¡Espero que quede bien y os guste!

It isn't finished, i'm drawing the last details. Neither has a title. All i know is that the drawing is about surf, vampires and dawns... i accept propositions for a title! By now it has three blue tones, two oranges and black. Probably the size will be 165x165mm (same as Meph). The first color scheme includes only three blues and black and resulted a beautiful night surfing scene. But i couldn't resist to mix vampires and dawns and i added the two orange tones... I hope it looks good and you like it!!

Ya está terminado "Meph"... ha quedado genial. Todo ha salido a la perfección, sin problemas. Los sobres también han quedado muy bien impresos. Ahora estoy firmando las serigrafías y en un par de días estarán a la venta. El precio será de 10 euros.

¡Ha quedado genial! Debido a que la plancha está hecha a mano, ha sido prácticamente imposible que el ajuste con la imagen impresa haya sido perfecto, por lo que en cada serigrafía aparecen zonas que están ligeramente fuera de registro. A pesar de eso, la serigrafía es muy espectacular... Ahora sólo queda elegir las mejores 30 (más las 5 pruebas de artista), firmarlas y después terminar las carpetas.

It looks great! Due to the hand-made process, it's been almost impossible to adjust exactly the plate to the printed image, so each print shows areas slightly out of register. In spite of this, the prints look absolutely amazing...! Now i have to chose the best 30 prints (plus 5 artist proofs), sign them and give the folders the final look.

Por fin he terminado la plancha y acabo de hacer la primera prueba. Ahora con esta prueba tengo que hacer los ajustes y seguramente habrá algún que otro cambio en la plancha. Una vez la plancha esté bien ajustada, tendré que ajustar la presión sobre cada zona... Pero estoy muy contento con el resultado.

At least i've finished carving the plate and the first test is done. Now with this test i must make the adjustments and there will be some changes on the plate. Once the plate will be perfectly adjusted, i will set the pressure over each area... But i'm so happy with this first test.

Ya está impreso "Nightlife #2"... La transparencia del color azul ha salido tal y como esperaba, aunque ha sido muy dificil ajustar el registro. Ahora solo me queda elegir las 50 mejores impresiones, firmarlas y numerarlas... "Nightlife #1" quedó genial, pero los colores de esta serigrafía han quedado espectaculares. Mañana imprimiré los sobres.

Por fin está impresa. Después de todos los problemas que he tenido con la pantalla, es increíble tenerla por fin impresa. Los colores y el registro han quedado muy bien.
Ahora queda el golpe en seco, que espero que quede igual de bien que en "The 80th Victory"...

Aunque acabo de imprimir el primer color de la carpeta de "When the hurlyburly's done...", ya veo que van a quedar muy bien. Están hechas en papel Chromolux rojo intenso de 250gr. aunque están impresas por la parte blanca.
Ayer imprimí el segundo color de la serigrafía, que ya va tomando forma. Esta tarde espero poder imprimir el tercer color (aún no lo he decidido, pero seguramente será el azul claro).

Although i've just finished printing the first color of the folder, i can see that they will look great. The folders are done with Chromolux intense red 250gsm paper, but printed on the white side.
Yesterday i printed the second color of "When the hurlyburly's done...", and the result is so nice. This afternoon i'd like to print the third color (haven't decided yet, but probably will be the light blue).

No me puedo creer lo que me está pasando. Después del desastre que ha supuesto para mi que Publi-Ser haya dejado de ofrecer el servicio de preparación de pantallas, no parece que se avecinen buenas noticias...
Estaba contentísimo (¡eufórico!) porque por fin habia encontrado un sitio con muy buena pinta en donde me podian preparar la pantalla... hasta que he visto la pantalla terminada... se me ha caido el alma a los pies. Yo no se lo que ha pasado. Envié un PDF y me pidieron un JPG. Envié el JPG y no se qué han filmado... El fotolito estaba como embotado, sin nitidez, pixelado... buff...
Les he vuelto a enviar el PDF y me han dicho que hablarán con quien lo filma para ver si se puede hacer algo... Estoy tan desilusionado... Bueno... a ver que pasa...

I can't believe what's happening to me. After the disaster of Publi-Ser ending his screen-making department, there are no good news in-sight...
I was very happy (euphoric!) because i had founded a cool place where i can get the screen done... until i've seen the screen done... and my heart sank. I don't know what has happened. I sent a PDF file and they ask me for a JPG. I sent the JPG and i don't know what have they filmed... The transparency was blotted, unsharp, kind of pixelated... buff...
I sent another PDF back and they've told me that they will try to fix the whole thing... But i'm so disappointed... But well... let's see what happen...

"The 80th Victory" ya está terminado. La verdad es que ha quedado mejor de lo que esperaba. El "golpe en seco" ha quedado ligeramente fuera de registro, pero el efecto es bastante espectacular. En la segunda foto se ve la Cuttlebug (la máquina que he usado como tórculo), la plancha de linóleo y las serigrafías humedeciéndose...

Ha quedado muy bien. Los colores son brillantes y muy intensos. Ahora llega la parte "experimento" de esta serigrafia: el golpe en seco. Tengo que preparar la plancha de linóleo y decidir sobre que zonas exactas quiero aplicar el efecto... espero que salga todo bien.
La semana que viene voy a estar fuera de casa (¡ de vacaciones !) asi que hasta la vuelta no voy a poder trabajar en "The 80th victory".

Ya está impreso el cuarto color... solo quedan dos y está quedando muy bien. Creo que el quinto color será el más complicado, porque en la zona del gorro se tiene que sobreimprimir sobre dos tintas, y me da miedo que la tinta no se adhiera bien... ya veremos.

Ha quedado muy bien. Usar el bronce metálico ha sido una buena idea, le da una vibración de color muy suave. La verdad es que estoy muy contento con el resultado. Ahora sólo queda imprimir el sobre. El sobre es de papel marrón (como el de las microprints) y en la parte de delante llevará impreso el logo de "The Outfit" en 3 tintas...

Ya está impreso el segundo azul de "The Outfit". Para ser sincero, después de ver impreso el primer azul no estaba seguro de como iba a quedar esta serigrafía. Pero con el segundo azul, la imagen ha empezado a tomar forma y todo ha cambiado. Creo que va a ser una de las mejores serigrafias de las que he hecho hasta el momento.

The second blue of "The Outfit" is already printed. To be honest, after printing the first blue, i wasn't sure of the result of this print. But with the second blue printed, the image is revealing the shape and everything has changed. I think this could be one of my best screenprints.

The first blue of "The Outfit" is already printed. Versatex's normal white ink is great, it gives less troubles than the "super opaque": i printed almost 30 before cleaning the screen.

Por fin está terminada la segunda microprint. Los colores han cambiado un poco con respecto al boceto inicial, están más contrastados. Ha quedado muy bien. Esta tarde elegiré los 50 mejores parar firmarlos y numerarlos. También estoy muy contento con el resultado de los sobres: el papel absorbe muy bien la tinta y queda genial. El precio es de 4 euros.

"Nightlife #1" it's finished!
At least the second microprint it's finished. The colors are slightly different from the first sketch, they had more contrast. It looks great. This afternoon i'll choose the best 50 prints to sign and number them. I'm also very happy with the envelopes: the paper absorbs the ink perfectly and looks so good. The price is 4 euros (about 6 $).

Ya están impresos los dos primeros colores de "Nightlife #1". Han quedado bastante bien. Mañana intentaré imprimir dos colores más (los dos verdes del pájaro). Me están dando muchos problemas los colores que tienen mucho blanco, porque el blanco que tengo es el "super opaque" de Versatex, y cada 5 0 6 pasadas obstruye la pantalla y tengo que limpiarla. Es genial para imprimir sobre colores oscuros pero para aclarar otros colores no es muy práctica.

Printed the first two colors of "Nightlife #1"
The first two colors of "Nightlife #1" are already printed. It looks fine. Tomorrow i will try to print the next two colors (the two greens of the bird). The colors that contain a lot of white are giving me problems because i have the Versatex "super opaque" white, and the screen gets blocked every 5 or 6 pulls and needs to be cleaned. This ink is great for printing over dark tones, but it's not so nice for lightening other colors.

Primeras impresiones con la nueva pantalla

Ya tengo la pantalla... y ya he empezado a imprimir. He empezado por el reverso de los sobres de las Microprints. He impreso los 200 mini-sobres que tenía, asi que ahora solo tendré que imprimir el logo de cada microprint en la parte de delante del sobre.
Casi todos han quedado bien impresos.

First prints with the new screen
I've got the screen... and i've started to print. The first thing printed it's been the back side of the Microprints envelopes. I've printed the 200 envelopes that i've got, so now i only have to print the logo of each microprint on the front side. Almost every envelope it's well printed.

El dibujo para la segunda microprint ya está preparado. Se titula "Nightlife #1" y es una serigrafía a 5 tintas sobre papel Rives Artist blanco de 320 gr. Medirá 57x90mm. y la edición será de 50 copias.
Esta mañana he enviado el archivo para que me preparen la pantalla, y me han dicho que esta misma semana la tendré... Ya estoy deseoso de tenerla en mis manos.

Microprint #2: "Nightlife #1"
The drawing for the second print of the "Microprints" series is ready. Entitled "Nightlife #1", it's a 5-color silkscreen, printed on 320gsm white Rives Artist paper. The size will be 57x90mm and the run will be of 50 prints.
This morning i've emailed the file to get the screen prepared, and they've told me that this week will be ready... I'm eager to have it on my hands.

Serigrafia: "The Outfit"

Esta es otra de las serigrafías que estoy preparando. Medirá 210x105mm y estará impresa a 4 colores sobre papel Rives Artist blanco de 320g. Probablemente habrá también una versión en microprint (en tamaño 100x100 mm, sobre papel Canson gris...).
Al final me he decidio por titularla "The Outfit" que es el nombre con el que se conocia al sindicato del crimen organizado que hubo en Chicago en los años 20 y 30, y que fue dirigido entre otros por el famoso Al Capone.

New silkscreen print: "The Outfit"
This is another print that i'm getting ready. The size will be 210x105mm and it will be 4-color printed on 320gsm Rives Artist white. Probably there will be a microprint version (measuring 100x100mm and printed on grey Canson paper).
Finally i've decided to call it "The Outfit" that is the name given to the crime syndicate based in Chicago in the 20s and 30s. One of the best-known leaders of "the outfit" was Al Capone.

Ya está estampada la primera microprint. Es un linograbado impreso en color negro sobre papel especial para grabado. Mide 57x89mm. La edición será de unas 35 copias.

"The 80th victory" es la próxima serigrafía que tengo en preparación. Medirá 147x147mm y estará impresa a 6 colores sobre papel Rives Artist blanco de 320g. Será ligeramente mayor que "In Davy's Grip", aunque la presentación será muy parecida.

"The 80th victory" está inspirada en el piloto alemán de la 1ª Guerra Mundial Manfred von Richthofen, más conocido como el Barón Rojo. Consiguió derribar 80 aeroplanos enemigos antes de ser abatido en 1918 cuando tenia sólo 26 años. Admirado por ambos bandos, fue enterrado con todos los honores militares por las tropas británicas.

Measuring 147x147mm, it will be slightly bigger than "In Davy's Grip", but the presentation will be very similar. "The 80th victory" it's inspired in the WWI german pilot Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron. He achieve 80 air victories before being shot down in 1918 when he was only 26. Admired by both sides at war, he was buried by the british troops with full military honours.

Nueva serie: Microprints

La nueva serie Microprints ya está en marcha. La idea de las Microprints es poder hacer un poco de experimentación (con tintas, papeles especiales, golpes en seco...) antes de pasar a formatos mayores. Microprints consistirá en pequeñas impresiones de unos 60x85 mm.

Los bocetos para las dos primeras "microprints" ya están listos. No son definitivos y ni siquiera tienen título aún... De momento la idea es imprimirlos en serigrafía y darles algún tipo de golpe en seco. Pero como hasta septiembre no prepararé la pantalla, igual cambian...

New Microprints series
The new Microprints series it's about to start. The purpose of the Microprints series is to experiment (with inks, special papers, embossing...) before printing bigger formats. Microprints will consist in little prints measuring about 60x85 mm. The sketches for the first two "microprints" are already done. They aren't definitive and they don't have a title yet... The idea is to screenprint them and apply some emboss. I won't prepare the screen until september, and maybe the sketches will suffer changes...
